How old should a child be before you move them from a crib to a toddler bed?
Baby Beddinglissabug_07 asked:
My little girl is 16 months old and she is still in a crib but is trying to crawl out, we have moved the mattress all the way down and it did no good. So I am wondering if now is a good time to convert her crib in to a toddler bed? Also she is still sleeping in our room and I am skeptical about moving her bed to her own room
I have a fear of a fire starting and I wont get to her in time. Any advice there?

When they start climbing out its time to go to the big girl bed.

I never slept in a crib, my babies won’t either. At about a year I was on a mattress on the floor in my parents room, then at 2-3 a bed in my room.
I will likely do the same with my kids.

If she is crawling out put her in a bed.

Ok, well definitely don’t do both of these things at the same time. Here are some options for you:
1. Move the crib to her room, and install a crib tent cover. She has to get used to sleeping by herself sometime…
2. Leave her in your room or move her to her own and put her in a pack-n play (harder to get out of).
3. Leave her in your room, and teach her to sleep on a mattress next to your bed. If you go with this option, you will have to completely baby proof your bedroom and either put a baby gate in your doorway or close and lock the door at night.
Once she is used to the mattress, you can move it into her room, and once she is a bit older you can raise it up on a frame and install bed rails.
just some suggestions, you can take them or leave them, but that is what I would consider.

Depends, some says as soon as they can climb out of the crib you should move them. But 16 months might be too young. I think the average is about 2 and half to 3. Ultimately it’s up to you, you know your child best.

When we bought our daughters toddler bed, it said right on the bed that 14 months is the youngest recommended age. We got it at 12 months, and she was fully sleeping in it at 14 months. Our son will be moving to a toddler bed at 14 months as well.

They say when a child starts climbing out it’s time to convert - to prevent injury. I never waited that long. My daughter was in her own room in a bed at 18 months (twin bed). My son was 15 months and I put him in his own room in a twin too. The rooms were across the hall and I have smoke alarms, so no worries. I also use the video monitor still. But there is a downside to this - they can easily climb out and walk into your room. It took awhile to get my son used to staying in his room. But now he’s fine. Since our bedrooms are on the second floor we had to safety gate the top of the stairs. Other than that it was fine. Also, for some reason we found my son slept very restless in the toddler bed - his bed was next to the wall, so we thought he needed more room and got him a twin and now he has more then enough room. If you make a big deal out of getting a “big girl” bed and maybe get a comforter set or something, it might be an easier transition. Be sure to get the safety rail for the side of the bed though. Everyone is comfy cozy now!! Good Luck!!!

2 years old
Any younger than that and they could be wandering around the house at night while you’re asleep.

When I was around 1 and half I flipped myself from my crib onto the concrete floor, my mom was so scared she thought I had broken my neck, but I stoop up and walked to her and that is about when she broke down crying too. I suggest getting the toddler bed before both of you start crying or get one of those net domes that prevent the child from crawling out.
This might be a better option because at 16 months trying to get the baby to stay in bed might be difficult.
