most brands are good. you dont have to go all out, because s/he will be needing a new one in a few years.
just make sure to get a mattress pad (one with a plastic liner on the bottom). it will be a lifesaver, and a mattress saver.

It is not about the brand and the cost. It is about safety. I spent quite a lot of time looking for one. The one I have (some European brand which I cannot remember) but meet all my criteria on safety.
1. One side of the mattress has larger holes on the foam. Some babies likes to lie on their tummy to sleep. So need to ensure even if they can turn their head later the matteress will not suffocate him
2. The mattress has a plastic cover for ease of washing especially if baby’s urine overflows, the most you change the mattress cover and sheet but the mattress can be cleaned easily and no stain and smell
3. foam on mattress is hard. Baby has fragile bones and support ( not developed yet). Something harder is good for them. They do not need pillows. Do not use adults mattress criteria to decide children’s
hope this help

You need to look for a firm mattres that fits the bed snug. there should be no gaps on the sides. I would put the bed up first then go get a mattress to see if it fits. I bought a mattress for my sons bed and it was too small. so I had to find one that was a little larger so my sons hand wouldn’t fit down between the side.
