At what age can you use an umbrella stroller instead of the big bulky travel system?

My boy is 11 weeks old and sits up well in his big Graco stroller but it reclines a fair amount. What are your thoughts about the umbrella strollers? I really need something light and small for keeping in the house, getting the other stroller in and out is a pain! Should I get one now or wait? Should I get one with a 5 point harness (do they have those?) or just normal buckles?

My mom kept all of us in “umbrollers” almost since we were newborn. They were safe and light and they weren’t unweildy.

I think his head will be too floppy for a bit yet. We didn’t start with a stroller till he was at least a year but I agree - its a lot easier. the travel system is very unwieldy and I don’t know how anyone coped with the old fashioned prams,

omg thats too early but thats my opinion. I put my kids in them when they were almost one but 11 weeks is way too early

when they start staying awake all day.
I bought one for the same reason when my son could sit up on his own, but every time he fell asleep I ended up carrying him. That was much more of a pain in the a$$ then moving the stroller around.

You should wait till he can sit up without support cuz such stroller has no support and can’t be laid flat so wait till your baby can support his neck and sit up by himself. Normal bukles and harness are both fine

Usually not until they can sit up unassisted, however in the past many moms used umbrella strollers from birth and just kept the stroller reclined on two wheels.
There are some very small lightweight proper strollers though.
However why not just use a baby carrier? Its so much easier.
Graco has these compact strollers:
This is probably the smallest baby buggy on the market, but can only be used for up to 15lbs:

I started using an umbrella stroller at 3 months but I could of started earlier. Zellers (in Canada) sells really nice 5 point harness reclining umbrella stroller for little babies. Its super light and easy to take anywhere.=-1&shouldCachePage=true&top_category=12508&parent_category_rn=12526

I have a Graco stroller and its big and bulky and barely fits in my trunk. So, yesterday in fact, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a sun stroller. My son is 16 weeks old (just about 4 months) and he has great head control. He really liked it cause he can see out so well. So, if you feel your son is ready now, go get one cause you’ll be using in the next few weeks anyways and they are SOOOO mcuh easier, lighter and more portable then those bulky ones!

You should probably wait until he can sit up on his own!!
I have a MacLaren umbrella stroller. I started using it when my son was 8 months old. It has a 5 point harness, its extremely light 3lbs and I love it!!!
But you do need to wait until 5 or 6 months. I knwo its a pain, but you need to think of his comfort!

you can get the strollers that are considered lightweight strollers like the aria - I actually got the graco metrolite - i think its about 15 pounds not as great as the real umbrella strollers but its pretty light you can recline it, it has a 5 point harness and you can use this particular one for newborns. at that age even if he is holding his head up well, if they fall asleep their heads tend to end up at a very awkward angle whenever i see very little babies in the umbrella strollers sleeping like that i feel so bad for them

I hate the big bulky strollers too. At 11 weeks, he’s too small for the umbrella stroller. However, you can use a baby carrier or a baby sling (my personal favourite).
